A 1775 Eye Witness Account of Jamaica Plain (Event Video)

Hidden Jamaica Plain presents a compelling look into the lives of various women at the outbreak of the American Revolution. Using a letter written by Sarah Winslow Deming the presenters outline how she escaped British-occupied Boston and took temporary refuge in Jamaica Plain.  Lucinda, whom she enslaved, was with her.  Speakers Mimi Pichey, Natalie Eldridge and Emily Curran of Hidden Jamaica Plain share their research on Deming’s vivid account of their escape and on Lucinda’s life.

This event was held on April 28, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. via Zoom (and also to an in person audience at the Connolly Branch of the BPL). Click on the triangle below to watch the presentation.

In response to questions about Lucinda’s book - it’s title is: The nature and necessity of that humiliation, which the spirit of God works in the souls of those that are brought savingly to close with the Lord Jesus Christ, as offered in the Gospel by James Nalton, late Minister of the Gospel in London [link to its record in the Library Company of Philadelphia’s catalog https://librarycompany.kohacatalog.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=157564]
