Learn about the suffragists who 100 years ago secured the passage of the 19th amendment, granting universal suffrage to women across the nation. Many Jamaica Plain residents were active in this fight, including Susan Walker Fitzgerald (who became the first women Democrat elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives). Another unsung suffragist is Lucy Stone (interred at Forest Hills Cemetery). She should be enshrined with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B Anthony and Lucretia Mott in the pantheon of those who were pivotal in the woman’s right movement, but she is much less known.
